Training supplements in endurance sports

I read this great article. I use supplements on a daily basis. After reading this I'm going to give them a go!
2010 was going to be a different year of training and racing. After the Hawaii Ironman last year, I gave Jesse Kropelnicki from QT2 Systems a call to see if he could help me reach a new level of potential as I had just finished Ironman #29. With a busy business and growing young family, I'd have to be diligent about not just my training but my nutrition and recovery. It turns out, one of Jesse's immediate suggestions was to use Clif Bar products during every training

session. During my run training, the protocol was to eat one Clif bar every 10 minutes like clock work. I buckled down and bought several boxes of the Bloks and got after it.

With so many great flavors to choose from, I tried them all. My favorites turned out to be the Mountain Berry, Tropical Punch, Strawberry and Lemon-Lime. Several of these were made with 25mg of caffeine per serving (3 Bloks). If you haven't tried the Bloks, they are a great change up from gels and bars. It's a cross between a gummy bear and a soft juju bee. Great flavors, nutritionally sound and they keep you rolling along when you have a steady intake of them during your training. The key is to practice every day of every week to mirror what you will do on race day. This prevents any nutritional surprises and trains your gut to handle the calories and frequency of fueling. Practice makes perfect and that can result in some break through performances when you stick to the plan and get it right.

While I reserved the Bloks for my run workouts, I would turn to the Clif Shot energy gels for the bike and before the start of my big sessions. As with many endurance athletes, I like my caffeine as much as the next guy trying to qualify for Hawaii. Clif Bar has great options for getting your fill with double shots of caffeine in some of their new flavors and no caffeine in others. The Chocoloate Raspberry is particularly good and surprisingly tastes like a nice dessert. The consistency makes it easy to get the gel out and the patented Litter Leash and helps keep the environment clutter free by keeping the seal attached to the gel packet when opening. Each gel has about 110 calories and are 85% organic. The Clif Shot Turbo has 100mg of caffeine and comes in Chocolate Cherry and Double Espresso.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the special place that Clif Builder's Bars have in my nutrition arsenal. I reach for these when I'm inbetween lunch and dinner or on the go. Each serving packs 20g's of protein and that can help keep you focused when you're burning the candle at both ends. They're a great snack to keep around and I really like the Cookie Dough Roks and the Chocolate Builders Bars.

Nutrition is often referred to as the 4th discipline when it comes to Ironman racing and I feel that I finally have this nailed down thanks to Clif products. By sticking to the plan at Ironman Lake Placid, I had a caffeinated Clif Blok every 2 miles and went on to run a personal best 3:16 marathon. Practice makes perfect!
